Word & Deed: Donations needed - Nepal earthquake

Word & Deed has been working with Pastor Anup Hiwale, a graduate of Puritan Theological Seminary who also oversees several projects which Word & Deed helps fund in India, to bring much needed assistance to the victims of the recent earthquake in Nepal.  Pastor Anup recently traveled to Nepal. With Pastor Amit of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Nepal and two seminary students, they embarked on an eight hour hike (round trip) to a remote area with three communities who had only received limited supplies so far. A local five person board was set up and together the board, with Pastor Anup and Pastor Amit, prayerfully mapped out a two-fold plan for relief.

1. Rationing Stations: These will be set up to provide staples such as rice, lentils, sugar and salt once a week for three months to 150 families.
2. Housing Reconstruction: This will likely follow the initial relief phase in order to reconstruct many homes which have been destroyed. Village leaders have agreed to provide free labour. The number of houses that will be reconstructed is yet to be determined.

Pastor Anup also purchased 22 tents as monsoon rains are expected by June 7, and people are sheltering close to the exterior walls of badly damaged homes which may yet collapse.

He described his trip as “heartbreaking”, and reported that “Nepal is, in a true sense, completely broken”.  Pray for the families, many of whom have lost loved ones, and the team that will bring relief while sharing the Gospel as they go.

Donations are welcome and should be marked for the "Nepal Earthquake".  Please click here for the addresses of our Canadian and US offices.  Donations can also be made online (CanadaUS).

For Canadian supporters, all donations made between April 25 and May 25 will be declared to the Canadian government which will then allocate matching funds to a Nepal Earthquake fund that has been established.
